Science: Universe is in decay

2nd law of thermodynamics

The 2nd law of thermodynamics says that the entropy (randomness or disorder) of the universe is forever increasing.

Current evidence suggests that all space, matter and energy that exists in the universe came into being in the Big Bang. The 2nd law of thermodynamics will continue therefore to operate on the existing matter indefinitely.

Ever expanding & cooling universe

The discovery of the "cosmological constant" in 1998 (and since confirmed by others) shows that the universe will almost certainly continue to expand forever at an ever accelerating rate. One consequence of this is that as the universes matter gets spread out more and more, eventually (many billions of years) no new stars will form, and existing ones will burn out.

As the stars burn out, heat will not be generated anymore and eventually no life will be possible. The universe and all life will end in what has been called "The Big Freeze".

Just has the Bible predicted, it seems that the whole universe is been subjected to decay. (see bible verses)

Philosophical Note

If the universe will eventually fizzle out and all life will cease... what hope, purpose or destiny is there for the human race?

Interestingly, Christianity is unique among all world religions by providing an answer to this question. Of all the world religions, only Christianity has built into its framework, a two creation model. According to the new testament of the Bible, in the future before life ends, God will replace this universe with a new one that is not subject to decay (2 Peter 3:13, Rev 21:1, Romans 8:21). Christianity seems to have anticipated this question, two thousand years before we knew enough to ask it.
